Time for Cutliffe to Make a Decision
David Cutcliffe made a sharp coaching decision by promptly announcing Sunday that Thad Lewis would be his quarterback for this week’s battle with the Kansas Jayhawks.
But I have only one problem with the way Cutcliffe went about this. It fundamentally is such a trivial thing and I was reluctant to even bring it up, however felt compelled to do it.
Cutcliffe indicated Lewis was one of many athletes who had contracted the flu and missed practice time.
If you tell me Lewis is the man, I’m okay with this, basically since I do not have a choice and you could care less what my opinion is. But there’s also the fact that you are the head coach/qb sage and understand more than I will ever identify about that position.
There is no need to tell me Lewis isn’t 100 percent.
He definitely insisted he didn’t want to cause a quarterback debate, however, as most know, qb debates 9 times beyond ten are started by enthusiasts and news organizations, not personnel.
If a quarterback debate manifests because of Renfree’s great play and Lewis’ not so good play then cope with it if the questions appear.
While I agree with his choice and swiftness of it he may have opened up a small door for criticism of his starter.
If Lewis doesn’t perform favorably at Kansas then Cutcliffe will certainly receive questions regarding whether or not Lewis is one hundred percent and if he isn’t, why isn’t Renfree playing in the game?.
So with respect to the coach’s good I hope Lewis steps up and is victorious or has a nice game, because the absolutely last thing the team needs at the moment in the wake of the great motivator of besting Army is a controversy.
Just ask Coach K if you’re looking for a second opinion. He has had to cope with 1 or 2 of situations like this one.
